character development

Character develpoment

What does your character want?

He wants to be left alone an for no one to confront or bother him.

What obstacles must they overcome to get what they want?

Defeating the vampires and hiding what happened.

In the end, do they get it? Was getting it/not getting it good or bad for them?

William comes out of his comfort zone and becomes a complete new man. So his original 'want' isn't his want anymore, his want at the end is to become store manager of his local shop he now works in.

Why do we care? What makes your story so damn interesting that people would be willing to give up two hours of their life on it?

It shows the progression of someones life throughout a period of time. Working would of been Wills worst nightmare at the beginning of the film, but towards the end of the film he wants to become store manager.

What does the character need?

Will needs to get a job and make a further for himself. He has relied on 'nana' for his whole life and hasn't done anything for himself. He needs to make sure he can live a happy healthy life incase his 'nana' doesn't have long left.

Why is this story happening now? Why is the character this particular age?

What is your characters worst nightmare?

What would your character willingly die more?

Top 6 studio companies

Who owns the big companies in the film industry?

Universal studios - Comcast
Warner Bros - Time Warner
Paramount - Viacom
20th Century Fox - 21st Century Fox - Rupert Murdock
Walt Disney - Walt Disney
Columbia - Sony

Summary -

Having 6 big companies dominating the film industry has positives and negatives.

The 6 dominating companies gain a lot of money. This money is used as funding for future films to recreate a high quality film. The money can be spent on staff, filming equipment, locations etc. A negative of 6 companies dominating the film industry  is that it doesn't allow up-coming companies a chance as much as they would have if the film industry wasn't dominated.

It could also allow the companies to portray their political opinions throughout their films. Would we be able to stop this due to the great success and size of the companies? The films could have hidden messages in them which we don't notice.

News essay

News

There are lots of conventions I would expect to see within a news broadcast. Codes and conventions are important within news because it shows what is expected from the audience and what isn't. Sometimes producing something they wont expect can work but within news its generally best to stick with them. Without conventions news wouldn't be what it is today.

Studio based news codes & conventions

Weather man - I expect a news show to present the weather. This usually requires another presenter (still dressed formally to address professionalism). This will also be live & will usually take place next to the presenter out of shot.

Dress code - I would expect the presenter to be formally dressed. This makes the show look a lot more formal and professional. I highly doubt that we'll see someone presenting in casual clothing in today's society.

Introduction - Graphics are edited to fit the target audience for the news show. For example, BBC has a world globe spinning around with names of cities around the world. This shows the news will be global.

Camera location - Multi-cam will be used in news shows to show a more than one angle of the news reader and to keep it as entertaining as possible so the audience don't get bored. There isn't any editing using more than one camera you just choose what camera you want when you want and that's what the audience will see. It also makes it look a lot more professional & high budget.

VT inserts - VT inserts show a wide coverage to a news show. VT's can be used for ongoing stories, this could be about health care or something that wont ever be old. They show that the news show can send a reporter somewhere a broadcast a story. This shows professionalism. VT's can be a very short, simple yet effective way of broadcasting the news. Having a reporter at the location of the story shows that it is most likely more factual because they're able to get primary news.

Bias - In my opinion, news will always be biased. Interviews that are broadcasted will be biased. For example, people was being interviewed about the 2011 London Riots in a form of a VT, this means the BBC have chosen which interviews they would like to be shown. Every interview was from a victim who was addressing the rioters as animals and making them look the worst of the worst people. I'm not saying that the riots was the right thing to do, but they had a reason why they were doing what they were doing. Im sure that the BBC had an interview with someone who agreed with the riots. I think if they did have, they could of broadcast it and made him look like an idiot. This could easily be achieved due to the power the media has, espically the BBC, anything they say will be taken as fact because we trust them as a news company.

(unfortunately i wasn't able to find the London Riots clip)

Why is multi-cam used in news shows? -

HOW ARE NEWS SHOWS STRUCTURED? THINK ABOUT  THE STRUCTURE AND HOW THE STORIES ARE ORGANISED. HOW IS THE CAMERA USED? HOW IS SOUND USED? WHAT ABOUT EDITING? YOU HAVE TO SPEAK ABOUT WHAT MAKES TV NEWS DIFFERENT FROM DOCUMENTARY OR FICTION FILM. WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUTTV NEWS? GIVE EXAMPLES FROM THE NEWS SHOWS  YOU HAVE SEEN.

The programmes audience, political bias and contract with the viewer – YOU NEED TO DISCUSS HOW THE AUDIENCE ARE BEING PERSUADED TO SEE THINGS IN A PARTICULAR WAY (SUBJECTIVE, BIAS, ONE-SIDED) OR WHETHER IT IS MORE OBJECTIVE, IMPARTIAL, FROM DIFFERENT POINTS OF VIEW – TALK ABOUT CHOICE OF IMAGES, WHO IS INTERVIEWED, HOW THEY ARE INTERVIEWED, HOW THE VOICE-OVER CAN GUIDE US, USE OF GRAPHICS ETC. FOR EXAMPLE, IN OUTFOXED THEY SHOW HOW FOX NEWS INTERVIEW 3 CONSERVATIVE POLITICIANS AND ONLY ONE DEMOCRAT SO THAT IT IS HARDER TO BE OBJECTIVE WITH 3 AGAINST ONE.

Issues of representation – YOU NEED TO WRITE ABOUT DIFFERENT KINDS OF REPRESENTATIONS IN EACH OF YOUR SELECTED NEWS SHOWS AND COVER RACE, GENDER, AGE, BELIEFS ETC – HOW ARE THESE REPRESENTED? (THINK ABOUT DRESS, ACTIONS, WHAT IS SAID BY THEM AND ABOUT THEM, USE OF CAMERA, SOUND, ETC) FOR EXAMPLE IN ‘OUTFOXED’ LIBERAL POLITICIANS ARE REPRESENTED IN A NEGATIVE WAY. IT WOULD BE USEFUL TO CHOOSE A NEWS PROGRAMME AND DISCUSS HOW DIFFERENT PEOPLE ARE REPRESENTED.

Why multi-camera setups are used and how the studio might be set up (this should include a studio diagram with camera positions drawn in) IT WOULD BE BEST TO DO THIS IN RELATION TO YOUR TV NEWS REPORTS AND EVALUATIONS AND EXPLAIN WHY AND HOW YOU USE MULTI-CAMERA BUT YOU COULD STILL TALK ABOUT IT IN RELATION TO FOX NEWS, BBC, C4 ETC. YOU NEED TO ANALYSE A STORY THAT USES MULTI-CAMERA.

Williams diary entry

I remember when i was in secondary school, it was the worst time of my life. I remember everyone taking the micky out of me. I hate those people, even too this day. Although i didn't like anyone, i could always rely on Mrs Wilson. She would always let me sit in her class during lunch times. She'd always tell me to revise English, I never did. I never did pass, maybe i should of listened to her after all. I don't need a job anyway, i don't want one either. Ive always got Nanny Jean to look after me.

She even spoke to me when someone pulled my trousers down while walking into a school assembly. No one spoke to me after that. Of course people did, but not because they wanted to, they would just call me names. As much as Nanny Jean & Mrs Wilson told me not to let it get to me it always did, and it always will. That one idiot ruined my school life, i never did go to school after that. I didn't do my exams either. I knew i wouldn't of passed, so there was no point.

Documentary modes;

Expository - expository documentaries are normally about a person or topic. They have been known as a 'classic documentary'. There are normally pictures or videos with a narration about the topic being voiced over the visual. A well known expository documentary would be any of David Attenborough's documentaries.

Observational -  this type of documentary is like reality. Big Brother is a observational. It is when you put camera there and leave them to record what ever happens. Camera's are not normally operated by people as it wouldn't create a realistic effect. If people see they're being recorded by someone they act different. Whereas if the cameras are hidden but they know they're being recorded it will look a lot more realistic.

Box News

Our news story is about footballers wages compared to soldiers. We would like to make a VT interviewing the head of sports science, Steve Nightingale, asking about his views on this story. The interviewer will be Peter Vaughan.

To achieve a professional interview we will need;

  • One camera
  • One microphone
  • One tripod
  • One sound recorder
The VT will run for approximately 1:30-2 minutes. We will need £0 to proceed. The audience is aimed towards 30-40 year olds. This is because the target audience for our news show (Box News) is 30-40 year olds.

Purposes of music videos

What darren would like to see in my answer.

1. Industry - The industry use music videos to make money. The music video advertises the song for people to buy it. It also promotes the artist/band.

2.  Audience - gives me a chance to get close to the band (performance based).
                     - entertainment - how does each video entertain the audience?

3. Filmmaker - make money - job - creative expression - it can be added to their portfolio - it can also have a message

The Sex Pistols documentary.
